In the long saga of the transformation of 95.5, the finished product has arrived: “Eva 95.5: The Valley’s Old School.”

After doing away with smooth jazz in December of last year, KYOT had called themselves “The New 95.5 KYOT” playing more of a smooth AC format with less jazz instrumentals.

“Eva is here and Eva wants to dance,” says KYOT.com. You will hear artists like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Prince. Tony Evans and Melissa Sharpe are still on the air.

An anonymous source is talking about a tweak to Clear Channel’s former smooth jazz station, 95.5 KYOT, finalizing the format flip now excluding any of the remaining jazz instrumentals. The source also mentions KYOT’s escape from the word “smooth,” which connotates jazz, including their recent new slogan, “the smoothest place on your radio.”

KYOT revamps itself in time for the new year

Critics waiting for another radio station to occupy FM 95.5 will have to wait longer. This morning, Clear Channel’s “Smooth Jazz 95.5 KYOT” has revamped their imaging, logo, and programming as “the new 95.5 KYOT.” In this change, we will hear more of smooth AC format with less jazz instrumentals. The iconic coyote and saxophone logos are gone in place of a simpler logo, shown below.

The voice guy of the station for over a decade, Geoffrey Holder, remains.

Radio Free Phoenix turns six

Radio Free Phoenix (RadioFreePhoenix.com), the free-form internet rock radio station based in the Valley, turns six years old this week.

Founded by Phoenix radio veteran Andy Olson in 2004, Radio Free Phoenix has continued to gain a loyal group of listeners that grow each year. The station prides itself on being free-form and on the internet. The on-air lineup is made of terrestrial radio veterans– a majority being from the Phoenix market–who have made the transition into the world of internet radio.

Some Radio Free Phoenix names that longtime Valley radio listeners would remember include Andy Olson (KSTM, KSLX, KZON), Liz Boyle (KOOL, KDKB, KESZ), Dave Cooper (KZON, KYOT, KJZZ), and Angela Allen (KOOL).

Severe weather takes stations off-air

A day full of rain for the Valley and severe thunderstorms, flooding, high winds and tornado watches have threatened many homes, blocked off access through many streets, and have taken down several objects in its path.

The storms worsened in the evening, including taking off two of Sandusky’s rockers, 93.3 KDKB and 98 KUPD and Clear Channel’s smooth jazz KYOT. All have been out for at least a couple of hours tonight.
